Abstract

From the very emergence of newspapers in Iran, one of the most prominent thematic areas they addressed was the publication of texts with historical content. The historical materials that appeared in the press functioned as reflections of society’s attitudes toward historical issues. This study, conducted with a descriptive–historical approach, aims to identify and classify the historical content of Iranian periodicals from their inception up to the end of the Qajar era.

An examination of 226 periodicals published during the Qajar period reveals the presence of 227 historical texts, figures that underscore the significance of historical writing within the journalistic discourse of that time.

In an era when Iranian society was encountering emerging political and intellectual transformations, the press served an educational and enlightening role, and history functioned as an effective tool for raising public awareness and legitimizing political and social reforms. Revisiting the historical past was regarded as a means of strengthening national identity and confronting external threats, and the press, by highlighting Iran’s historical heritage, actively contributed to fostering cultural cohesion. Moreover, the inherent appeal of historical topics increased readership and supported the financial sustainability of periodicals. Collectively, these factors enabled the Qajar-era Iranian press to produce a broad and diverse range of historical content and to play an influential role in shaping the society’s historical memory.
