[English]
One major aspect of Iranian culture in the contemporary period is its influencing by the modernist discourse. This was made by its cultural and linguistic transactions with the western countries and, more importantly, by its neighboring the Caucasus and Ottoman Empire in the Qajar period. In contemporary Iran, “play” as a new form of writing have been using to express modern political and social concepts and ideas. Moreover, it had a special potential to be connected with significant audiences in comparison with the pre-modern texts. The language of play was simple and related to the language of the people. Compared to traditional forms of writing, the play had the ability to connect to more people. Classic texts in Persian mainly had a complicated language and their audience was the cultural elite. Now, the cultural elite wrote works such as play with simple expression. So, they could express new concepts such as nationalism with this simple language. Focusing on play’s texts of Constitutional and Pahlavi periods, this essay will discuss nationalism as a strong concept in modern Iran. Playwrights tried to redefine Iranian nationalism with emphasizing on symbols such as the flag, the map, the national anthem and nostalgic look at the ancient past. Their suggestions for strengthening nationalism in Iran have focused on modern education, raising children and defining a modern concept of homeland. What’s more, plays of these two era are not categorize in the same way. During Pahlavi period the central government supported nationalism, thus this concept takes on an authoritarian aspect. In this period, nationalism discourse have been dominant and playwritings influenced by this discourse. A comparative look at the plays of Pahlavi period and the constitutional period shows this discourse turn. This turn has clearly reflected in the approach of plays to the issue of nationalism.
